Inner tube uses

Inner Tube Uses

Even though many of todays' tyres have been designed to be tubeless in operation, there are still a good deal of situations where a tube is either necessary or preferential. They come in a wide range of different sizes and are suitable for many different applications from a wheel-barrow to a homemade raft!. Our inner tube sizes cover most applications ranging from small machinery right through to large turf machines and tractors.

Inner tubes can be a complicated affair when it comes to the size and valve type required. Terrain Tyres have a huge range of tubes in stock, so have tried to answer some of the most common questions that arise. You can easily identify what tube you require in 2 easy steps:

Pick your size first, then choose your valve type

Inner tube sizes

Inner Tube Sizing - Step 1

Inner tubes are available in a wide variety of sizes and are available to suit a vast range of applications. The easiest way to find your tube size, is to read the size from the sidewall of the tyre they are going to be used in. You can then search for that size in our inner tube section of the website. Sometimes an inner tube can cover a range of different tyre sizes, as they are flexible and conform to the size and shape of the tyre they are going into. These sizes are usually listed as a range in the product description and title.

E.g. 18x8.50/9.50-8

This tube is suitable for use in either a 18x8.50-8 OR 18x9.50-8 tyre

In a few cases, there may not be a specific size that matches the tyre. Our team are more than happy to help advise you on the correct tube in these situations and are available through live chat, email or telephone for your convenience.

Inner tube valve types

Inner Tube Valve Type - Step 2

Inner tubes have a variety of different valve types for different applications. These fall into 2 main categories: Bent or straight valves

Bent Valves

There are variations of each, but usually bent valves are metal and can have varying lengths and angles at which the valve bends at. The bent valves are usually used when space is limited in the wheel and so the valve needs to come out of the rim at an angle to ease inflation. They are also used in applications where the valve may be susceptible to damage from hazards that the wheel may brush up against in use. Having a bend in the valve helps protect the tube from being damaged from unwanted contact. Bent valves are very common on small wheels and tyres like those that are used for small machinery, generators, sack trucks and material handling equipment such as trolleys. They are also used in small turf machinery, Forklift trucks and even HGV’s and trucks!

Straight Valves

Straight valves can come with a rubber or metal stem and also offer different inflation methods such as water inflation.

Rubber valves are found in a huge range of machinery and equipment due to their versatility, durability and price. These can be used in lawnmowers, ATV’s, wheel barrows, cars and all the way through to tractors and agricultural machinery. The most common sizes of straight rubber valves are TR13 and TR15.

Metal valves offer increased resilience to knocks and scrapes whilst in operation. The metal valve is usually used in higher pressure applications but also offer different inflation methods such as water, to allows for water ballast tyres and machinery often found in agricultural uses. Most larger tractor tyres use the metal valve type due to the increased durability that they offer.
