Industrial Tyre Applications

If you are looking for Industrial Machinery Tyres, you have come to the right place. Terrain Tyres has an extensive catalogue of all of the popular makes, models and sizes of Industrial Tyres. We have quality, yet affordable offerings from BKT, GRI, Galaxy and Ozka and also have premium choices such as Vredestein, Trelleborg and Camso. We have tyres for all industrial applications including JCB and Caterpillar Diggers and Backhoe loaders, telehandlers, and skidsteer machinery. Our Industrial Tyre patterns include more aggressive tractive tractor type patterns, "hockey stick" patterns for agro-industrial use and also block patterns for use on hard packed surfaces. We also stock tyres with reinforced sidewalls and heavy ply ratings to offer the best durability and puncture resistance, minimising down time of construction machinery. If you have any questions relating to your industrial tyre or construction machinery tyre purchase, please contact our team of advisors, who are always happy to help.

Industrial Tyre Sizes

Finding the correct tyre for your Industrial or Construction Machinery involves knowing the correct tyre size. The size is usually written on the sidewall of the tyre and can be displayed in a number of different ways. We have detailed an explanation of how the different methods of measuring the tyre can be written below:

Two Number Imperial Tyre Sizes - e.g. "10 - 16.5"

This measures the size of the tyres in inches. The first number denotes the overall width of the tyre which in the example above is 10". The last number is the diameter of the rim (wheel) in inches. In this example it would be 16.5"

Three Number Imperial Tyre Sizes - e.g. "10.5 / 80 - 18"

This measures the size of the tyres in inches. The first number denotes the overall width of the tyre which in the example above is 10.5". The middle number is the sidewall height of the tyre as a percentage of the width which is approximately 8.4" in the example above (80% of 10.5"). The last number is the diameter of the rim (wheel) in inches. In this example it would be 18"

Metric Tyre Sizes - e.g. "255 / 75 - 15.3"

This is the newer, 'metric' measurement where the first number is again the width of the tyre, but is measured in mm. In this case 255mm. The second digit represents the tyre sidewall profile (height) as a percentage of the width. In this example the sidewall height would be 75% of 255mm (approx. 191mm). The last digit is again the diameter of the rim (wheel), still measured in inches. In this example it would be 15.3"

Industrial Tyre Load / Speed & Ply Ratings

There is more to choosing an Industrial or Construction tyre than just the size required. Agro-industrial tyres are made and tested to work under certain criteria and limitations and the tyre load /speed and ply ratings all help choose the correct tyre for the application. The load speed index (service Index) is usually clearly marked on at least one of the sidewalls of the tyres.

Load Index is the limit of weight that the tyre can safely carry. Manufacturers make and test the tyres to operate under a certain weight. Once the tyre has passed these tests, it is awarded a load rating. It is essential that the correct load rating is used for Industrial machinery tyres. Diggers, Backhoe Loaders and Telehandlers, all are designed to carry specific weights and fitting a tyre that doesn't meet these requirements can lead to premature wear, tyre damage or failure. This in turn reduces productivity and ends up costing more in the long term. Load indices are usually denoted by a number. The number itself is not the actual weight carried but represents the maximum weight that the tyre has been designed and tested for.  Most tyres have a load index between 0 (45kg's) and 170 (6000kg's). For more information on Industrial tyre load indexes, please refer to our load index chart on the Tyre Guide page.

Speed Rating is the maximum speed that the tyre has been designed to operate at. As with the load index, the speed rating is an important part of any tyre purchase. Ensuring you have the correct tyre for the job means better operation, reduced downtime and associated costs and increased overall value. Industrial tyre speed indices are usually shown as a letter. lower speed tyres use A1 (3mph) to A8 (25mph). The higher speed rated tyres usually use B (31mph) to F (50mph).

Ply Ratings can be quite confusing in modern times and used to be the standard way to represent the overall strength of the tyre. Ply rating used to show how many plies of rubber that were used to make up the construction of the tyre. For example, if a tyre had a 10ply rating, it would be made up of 10 plies (layers) of rubber. Modern advances in tyre technology have lead to other materials than rubber being used and construction methods increasing the strength of the tyre. The PLY rating is less commonly used to convey the number of plies and is now more relevant in showing the strength of the tyre 'AS IF' it had that number of plies of rubber. Industrial tyre ply ratings are still useful when used as a guide in assessing the overall strength of the tyre.

Tubeless (TL) & Tube Type (TT) Tyres

Tyres tend to be either designed to work with an inner tube or without. Often this will be marked on the tyre sidewall as to which type of fitment the tyre has been designed for. 'Tubeless' (TL) means that the tyre has been designed to fit on a rim without the use of an inner tube. A valve is inserted into the rim that creates the seal and allows the tyre to be inflated.

'Tube Type' (TT) means that the tyre has been designed for use with an Inner tube. The internal construction of the tyre is usually a lot smoother so that the tube doesn't experience unnecessary friction or chafing inside the tyre.

Although it is possible to put inner tubes in a tubeless tyre, it isn't always advisable. The extra friction and wear that can be endured in this situation can cause premature failure of the inner tube, which in turn could lead to premature failure of the tyre. Tube type tyres can fit on most rims, but if changing from a tube type tyre to a tubeless, it is not just the tyre type that needs checking as it also necessary that the wheel itself is capable of being used with a tubeless tyre.
